  2. Videotext for your ST computer ?

  4. Meanwhile we have got two different lines of deoders . The first 
  5. one  by  the  firm 'Print Technik' for about 298  marks  and  the 
  6. second one produced by 'H & T' , from Berlin ,for 249 marks.
  7. We decided to take the second version because this system is also 
  8. able to work with the latest VT-technics called 'TOP Decoder' !
  9. The installation is very easy:  you'll have to put the decoderbox 
  10. into the centronics-printer-port and conect it with the contained 
  11. power-supply  plug ( already fixed to the right values ).Then  we 
  12. need the videosignal !  Therefore we've got some different  ways: 
  13. we  can get it from a videorecorder with video-output  or  SCART- 
  14. output  (  also  called EURONORM-plug ) or  from  a  TV-tuner  by 
  15. Phillips  or Vobis.At the moment we're not able to get  a  video- 
  16. signal from a normal TV.
  17. Afterwards  one has got to start the included software from  disk 
  18. or  harddisk.Their's  no  protection though you  won't  have  any 
  19. problems ! Then the computer wants to if he should load the three 
  20. top-pages  and after answering 'yes' he tries to load  them  into 
  21. the  avaible memory.Only ARD (german TV) and ZDF ( also german  ) 
  22. videotext  allow this.Then we get the mainmenue on page  100  and 
  23. see  the  typical videotext page with the number  of  the  actual 
  24. page,the sign of the TV-station,the date and the time.Under these 
  25. things  we've got the videotext-page and another  menueline  with 
  26. several systemfunctions:'well done' !
  27. The monochrome user is able to choose two different ways to  show 
  28. the  picture:first  in the rasterplotting or in  a  simple  white 
  29. plotting.The  colour users can't choose,they see the  picture  as 
  30. watching with a colour TV.
  31. I think it is very well done that the program is able to load the 
  32. main pages after starting it and also loaded pages after watching 
  33. are  safed  into  the  memory  which  means  a  faster  and  more 
  34. comfortable  working with this system.While searching a page  the 
  35. user can press 'H' to stop the searching.At this point we've  got 
  36. a very interesting function:  the possibility to safe or print  a 
  37. page  or a text.We can safe the text using ASCII format and  then 
  38. work on them with each other system.The pictures can be safed  in 
  39. Degas  format  in all different resolutions.And  we've  also  the 
  40. function  to print the text or grafics.Therefore we can use  some 
  41. different  refiners  for different printers !  One  has  got  the 
  42. chance to print by using the centronics-port or the seriall-port. 
  43. We  can't  print  with  directly  with  the  Atari  laserprinter, 
  44. therefore we have to use the Laserbrain-FX-emulator,but this  has 
  45. got no negativ effects !
  46. But their will be problems if you've got an instable  videosignal 
  47. or if their is a rustle or some other disturbances.Then we have a 
  48. multilated  page and you must wait some seconds to get a  correct 
  49. output.It's  also possible that the decoder is hacing,this  means 
  50. that  you're  not  able  to make any inputs or  if  you  want  to 
  51. make, you have to make them as slow as possible.
  52. I think it is disturbing that the pages needs some passages to be 
  53. installed  right  and not as used by the original that  the  user 
  54. will see the page after the getting the last information-bit.
  55. Another  possibility  is  to load all pages  after  starting  the 
  56. program and the user is then able to get the pages very fast. The 
  57. ST might have enough memory to safe all pages !!!!!!!!!!
  58. Another  error:if  you  want  to change the  time  by  using  the 
  59. function  clock,then you'll get a system crash.After reading  the 
  60. manual  (  diskfile  !  ) we get to know that  this  function  is 
  61. another  expansion.They  should  change this part  and  tell  the 
  62. reader that he's not allowed to use it.
  63. The  programers  should try to produce an update and  avoid  such 
  64. simple errors.The TOP-decoder does his work without any  mistake. 
  65. The  user is able to work with his mouse and he needs  no  start- 
  66. page or index.But at the moment you can use this TOP-decoder only 
  67. with the VT-signal by ARD and ZDF !
  68. Now  we wanted to test if we're able to get other  VT-signals  by 
  69. some other TV-stations and then to work with them.First we  tried 
  70. all the third channel stations ( HR 3,WDR 3,SWF 3,BR 3) and  then 
  71. the  SAT  1  and  last but not least the  videotext  by  sky  and 
  72. superchannel.The system was able to work with all different kinds 
  73. but  you  should  clean the memory before  switching  to  another 
  74. station  because if not it is possible that you'll first get  the 
  75. old page.

  77. After all I think we can say that this decoder is made well.  The 
  78. hardware was well done and only the power-plug could be better  . 
  79. Instead of the die-plug I would take a normal plug.Positiv is the 
  80. little  LED  which  shows  if the decoder  is  activ  or  not.The 
  81. software has got only some little mistakes and the VT-decoder  is 
  82. a cheap possibility to get a VT-decoder who hasn't got the chance 
  83. to  get  a new TV or to change his old TV  station.Also  a  cheap 
  84. chance  for  all  people which have  got  only  a  clolourmonitor 
  85. because they can conect the decoder with a videorecorder !!!!
